Dear Ms. Matyakubova:
Subject: Formal Letter of Introduction
“One must be careful of
books, and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us”
(Cassandra Clare, The Infernal Devices). My name is Leticia Rivera, a senior in
City College of New York and currently a student of your fall semester 2016
class. I plan to pursue a Bachelor of Science in psychology in order to become
a psychologist and researcher. Throughout my many academic years, I have
managed to improve my reading and writing abilities. With more than three
English courses taken throughout my undergraduate schooling, there should be
great capabilities for achievement this semester.
Growing
up in a Hispanic background, my family raised me speaking English and Spanish.
It was a priority to learn Spanish, in order to speak to my elderly family
members whom did not speak English. Although this may seem like an obligation,
it was a benefit. A benefit for a my past work in a law firm, who’s most
clients were Hispanic. Also a benefit for succeeding in language courses in
college.
Personally,
there isn’t someone close to my life who motivated me to succeed in the
literacy aspect. But one thing for sure, my academic institutions have. Seeing
the difference between someone who reads, and speaks properly compare to
someone who does not, brought high standards for myself. Each English
professor, in which I encountered with, expected me to show my fullest potential.
With respect to them, I was able to embrace the challenges English courses
usually carried.
The issues/themes that are interesting
to read and write about are war events, scientific topics, international situations,
political debates, and local citizens experiences. These topics keep myself
aware of what may go on with the world around me. If there were a specific
topic to choose for writing, the preference would be scientific research. It provides informative information.
The most prominent genre is non-fiction
stories. This genre is significant because it portrays real life events. There
is a chance, one may have experienced what the writer is discussing and this
allows the reader and writer to have a close relationship. I may have not experienced
many influential moments, but many others have, which is why I love to listen
and read about it. Just taking a moment to close the eyes, and putting one in
the shoes of the writer (or even character).
The goal for this semester is to
continue evaluating and growing my literacy skills. For these skills will allow
me to progress in my academic and professional careers. Maybe one day I can
write a piece of work, which can be influential to the public. I am hoping to
hear any advice or concerns from you.
Sincerely,
Leticia
Rivera
