Entry #2 -“Why We Need to Understand Science”
Each
human being has done something at least once in their life that is scientific.
Let’s say, cooking eggs can be scientific. Something simple, but can be
extravagant if one only knew what was happening to that egg (in terms of
science). Carl Sagan speaks in an article regarding the understanding of
science and how Americans lack the knowledge of science. He uses the words “
scientifically illiterate”. It sounds harsh, but may be true. In the article he
uses statistics to reveal the rankings Americans stand by, compared to other
countries in subjects like math, chemistry and science. It was shocking to read
that Americans are ranked last or close to last in the academic subjects
previously mentioned.
This
setback brings motivation and awareness for myself, as an American. The desire
to constantly be aware, accept and seek scientific knowledge. I wonder what
will my country really look like, if more of the population is scientifically
literate. Just imagine how the increase of new ideas, and inventions our
country and even the world can benefit from. My country loves to be prideful
with their financial and military powers. However, it should be prideful with
their education and intelligence.
