“What is Science?”
Journal Entry #1
In 1945, George Orwell composed an
article discussing his viewpoint on a letter written by Mr. J. Stewart Cook. Mr.
Cook was discussing the necessity of everyone becoming scientifically educated,
as well as scientist being involved in humanities. Mr. Orwell main concern for
his article is defining the term science. He wanted to clarify to the public
that science isn’t just biology, chemistry or anything of that matter. Science
can broaden into other subjects such as history and arts.
I agree with Mr. Orwell on the case
of broadening the term science to all teachings. It makes sense for the world,
regardless of the discipline being practiced, should be scientifically
educated. Now that I think about it, all disciplines examples such as history,
politics, business and many more, have suggested scientific approaches in
gaining information. As a student I have involved myself in many different
subjects in the academic environment. Somehow, I always was able to use
scientific understandings to continue my success in courses unrelated to
subjects like biology and chemistry.
